EC: DAP’s GE Qualification To Be Known After RoS’s Case Resolved

(The Sun Daily) – The Election Commission (EC) will only decide on DAP’s eligibility to contest in the next General Election (GE) once the party settles its ongoing legal issue with the Registrar of Societies (RoS).
EC chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah (pix) said the commission does not wish to interfere with RoS’ affairs, and that as such, it was premature to comment on the issue.
“This matter involves the law. As long as no final decision is made regarding the situation, it is too early for us (EC) to give our comment.
“Let the parties involved settle the matter first. The question of whether (DAP) is qualified or not (for the GE) is too premature for us to decide,” he said.
RoS director-general Mohammad Razin Abdullah had, on July 7, ruled that DAP’s central executive committee (CEC) re-election in 2013 was not held in accordance with RoS’ requirements and found the appointment of the CEC and the main office-bearers to be invalid.
On Sunday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said DAP must obey the directive from RoS to legitimise its CEC, or its candidates would not be allowed to contest in the 14th GE.
This is because if the party’s leadership is not recognised by RoS, they will not be able to sign the general election nomination papers that will allow their candidates to contest in the GE as candidates of the party.
