Shahrir-SamadPUTRAJAYA: Felda will back a proposal by its subsidiary Felda Global Ventures Bhd (FGV) to recruit thousands of new workers to fill a labour shortage that has cost the group to lose RM2 million a day.

Felda chairman Shahrir Samad said the agency would support and work together with FGV to raise its efficiency and profit.
“As the largest shareholder in FGV, Felda will do whatever it can to help,” he told reporters at a gathering of Felda settlers here today.
He said this in response to a statement by FGV acting chairman Sulaiman Mahbob that the company planned to take in 7,000 to 8,000 new foreign workers to fill the shortage in its oil palm plantations.
The shortage became acute since April after recruitment of Indonesian workers began falling because of the declining ringgit and greater job opportunities in their home country.
About 70% of the labour force in the plantation industry are Indonesians who are attracted by the high wages and similar culture in Malaysia.
Fewer workers will delay harvesting of the oil palm fruits which lead to lower oil extraction. -FMT
