Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Shahidan Kassim has found himself in a peculiar situation in regard to his relationship with former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
As a member of Umno and the ruling government, Mahathir is Shahidan's sworn political enemy.
However, the minister is also serving under Mahathir in the Muslim Welfare Organisation Malaysia (Perkim), where they are vice-president and president respectively.
Explaining this situation to the media today, Shahidan said he had a good relationship with Mahathir, but that he would not pull any stops in fighting the latter.
"Tun (Mahathir) is Perkim president, I am the vice-president. I have no problems (working with him) on voluntary work for Perkim.
"(But) Tun is trying to topple Najib, meaning he wants to topple the government, which also means he wants to topple me because I am in the government.
"Anyone who wants to topple the government, I will surely fight them to the end," Shahidan said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.
He added that he would also fight anyone who attacks BN-Umno.
He said if he did not defend Umno, he would have to "join another party".
Mahathir, who was a long-time Umno stalwart and its longest-serving president, left the party in 2016 over continued disagreements with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Mahathir has since formed his own splinter group, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), and is currently the chairperson of Pakatan Harapan. - Mkini
