PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth must be scraping the bottom of the barrel to back controversial division leader Jamal Yunos as the party’s youth chief, says PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
He added that it was indicative of the talent pool among the party’s youth.
“If Jamal is their best bet, then Jamal is the leader they deserve.
“Perhaps they need someone like Jamal to mobilise their base,” he told FMT.
Fahmi was asked to comment on Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz backing Jamal to replace Khairy Jamaluddin as Umno Youth chief.
Khairy is 43 this year and has said he will not be holding the post forever.
Malay daily Sinar Harian reported that Jamal had expressed his intention to contest for the post if Khairy no longer wanted it.
The Red Shirts leader said this would be an option, especially if there was no parliament or state seat available for him to contest in the 14th general election.
Fahmi said Jamal was certainly braver than Khairy in carrying out demonstrations .
“Jamal should show his ability by immediately mobilising a demonstration in front of the United States embassy to oppose the alleged interference in the country’s affairs after the Department of Justice’s civil suit over the purchase of assets in the US using funds allegedly embezzled from state-owned investment firm, 1MDB.”
It was previously reported that the DoJ’s civil suit is to recover more than US$1 billion (RM4.27 billion) worth of assets such as property, expensive jewellery, artwork, a yacht, a private jet and film rights.
“Since Jamal has been so vocal about things in Selangor and since he is able to attract attention in Selangor, I hope he will not miss the opportunity to mobilise the protest on the DoJ’s filing,” Fahmi said.
Meanwhile, PKR’s Batu MP Tian Chua said the Umno had become so desperate that it now depended on Jamal to save it and play on the race card and violence.
“They can’t seem to have a rational discussion with anyone.
“When Mahathir Mohamad wanted to challenge Nazri to a debate, Umno did not want. It looks like Umno is now using odd characters as defenders,” he told FMT.
He said Umno was previously seen as a moderate party stabilising Malaysia’s multiracial society, but was now becoming more erratic.
“For them to back Jamal, it shows they don’t have rational and intelligent people who are interested in being with them.”
Jamal previously created a ruckus at the Selangor state secretariat building when, wearing only towels, he demanded to shower at the menteri besar’s office in protest against the disruption of water supply in Selangor.
He also caused a stir on a separate occasion by staging another protest at the state secretariat building, this time with 16 hearses and coffins. - FMT
