Mahathir-Apandi spat takes religious turn

Former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad has challenged attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali to swear on the Quran that reports by the authorities did not implicate Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak of wrongdoing with regard to the RM2.6 billion found in the latter's bank accounts.

Mahathir said this in response to Apandi's claim that he did not conceal evidence regarding the matter nor the 1MDB affair. Apandi also said he had nothing to hide and feared only Allah and no one else.

Mahathir said that Apandi does not fear Allah because he did not declassify reports by Bank Negara, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the auditor-general in relations to the matter. 

"These reports were hidden from the public because Apandi's statements were untrue. 

"This means Apandi lied and Allah knows Apandi lied. God knows that Apandi is trying to protect Najib from the courts.

"This is a form of deceit and breach of trust by a prosecutor. The breach of trust is a sin," wrote Mahathir on his blog today.

Mahathir said Apandi still has a chance to atone for his sins by taking a religious oath. 

"He can swear on the Quran in a mosque that nothing in the reports from Bank Negara, MACC or auditor-general states accused Najib of wrongdoing with regard to the RM2.6 billion in his bank accounts," he said.

Last year, Mahathir had issued a similar challenge three weeks after Apandi cleared Najib of any wrongdoing with regard to the RM2.6 billion and the 1MDB affair.

Najib has claimed that the RM2.6 billion was a donation from an Arab source. - Mkini
