Johor ruler gives nod for 'straight' rail bridge with Singapore

Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has given the nod for the authorities to build a new rail bridge between Singapore and Malaysia.
However, the bridge must now be straight, instead of the original "curved" design.
The ruler had expressed this to the Land Transport Commission (Spad) during a meeting on Wednesday.
Spad had presented three design proposals to the ruler, who previously objected to the "curved" design.
The bridge is part of the new Rapid Transit System, which will feature a two-station rail service between Bukit Chagar in Johor Bahru and Woodlands MRT in Singapore.
It is designed to serve about 10,00 commuters an hour or about 80,000 to 100,000 commuters a day.
Spad said that the new bridge will be 25 metres high.
"The sultan granted consent for a 25-metre-high bridge straight across the Straits of Johor.
"The alignment adheres to the technical guidelines of the Marine Department, which requires a minimum 25-metre air draft (the clearance height from the water level to a vessel's height)," said Spad, according to Bernama.
Spad added that Sultan Ibrahim had also expressed his concern over traffic dispersal at Bukit Chagar.
In August, Sultan Ibrahim objected to the original "curved" design, prompting Putrajaya to go back to the drawing board.
The new RTS is a joint-venture between Prasarana Malaysia Bhd and Singapore's SMRT Corp Ltd. The scheduled completion date is 2024. -Mkini
