MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong has urged Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to postpone the sacking of 17,000 political appointees until after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive season
He said the announcement by Mahathir had caused distress among those affected.
"I can imagine the uncertainty going through the minds of those with low salaries, thinking about the future of their families what more to celebrate Ramadan and the coming month of Syawal.
"I plead with the prime minister to consider postponing the termination until after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
"I urge the prime minister to take pity on them who are surely directionless and lost during this holy month," Wee said in a statement today.
Mahathir said yesterday the hiring of political appointees as a "wastage" the government had to deal with.
However, the prime minister assured low-income staff such as drivers, will not be terminated but will be reassigned to another post according to their qualifications.
Wee said postponing the terminations until after Hari Raya would allow those affected to find other means of employment to support their families. -Mkini
