Detained: Couple selling cannabis through Facebook

The sale of drugs intensified before Ramadan as they offered buyers special prices.

SHAH ALAM: The shady deals of a husband and wife selling and trafficking drugs through social media were brought to light when they were arrested during a raid at an apartment in Setia Alam here on Tuesday.

Selangor Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department chief ACP Amarjit Singh said the couple were detained by a police team at 5.30pm.

“The two suspects, aged 36 and 37, used Facebook for their modus operandi.

“Our investigations show that the sale of drugs had intensified before Ramadan. They were offering buyers special prices.

“Customers were given a bank account to deposit payments for drugs purchased, after which the drugs were sent to them through postal or courier services,” Amarjit told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters here today.

He said following the detention of the suspects, police also seized two packets of dried ganja or cannabis weighing 300gm, a slow cooker with 2.3kg of fluid believed to be liquid cannabis and stickers with the words “The Real Cannabis” and other drug paraphernalia.

Amarjit said the value of the seized drugs amounted to RM45,520.

“Police also sealed their RM38,000 home believed to have been used for processing and selling the drugs for the past two years,” he said.

He said the couple would be remanded until May 22 and the case investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act, which carries a death sentence or life imprisonment and whipping.

Amarjit added that from January to April this year, police arrested 6,523 people involved in various drug-related cases across the state.

“Over the last four months, 22 students under the age of 18 and another 75 students from public and private institutions were also detained for drug-related offences,” he said. -FMT
