PETALING JAYA: A prominent academic says the new government should review the contracts or appointments of the management and board members of government-linked companies as part of efforts at reforms.
Universiti Malaya’s Terence Gomez told FMT he was surprised that some of them have not yet resigned because they have been implicated in serious allegations of corruption.
“There have been serious allegations of corruption in GLCs including Tabung Haji and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera among others.”
“Board members who are politicians should also immediately step down from their posts.”
Gomez said the Pakatan Harapan government must begin immediate reforms into the GLCs, starting with investigating allegations of corruption.
“There is a lot of work to do because there are thousands of companies with different structures so the reforms cannot be delayed,” he said, adding seven out of the top 10 public-listed companies were GLCs.
“The likes of government investment holding companies like the Employees Provident Fund, Khazanah Nasional, Tabung Haji, Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MoF Inc) and the Retirement Fund Incorporated (KWAP) which own these GLCs must also be reformed immediately as these institutions have a direct impact on the people.”
Perbadanan Nasional Berhad chairman Syed Ali Al-Habshee, who is the Cheras Umno leader, said he had not resigned yet as he would want to complete a proper handing-over of duties.
“My contract is until 2019, but we have a new government so it’s fair if they want someone else to be chairman, I will gladly step aside. I just haven’t resigned because I have a duty as chairman,” he said.
“Once the finance ministry informs me that they have a replacement lined up, I will complete my handover and resign. I don’t want to leave without completing a proper handover.”
A representative of Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad said the status quo was being maintained while awaiting instructions from the Ministry of Finance.
Among prominent organisations where Umno members hold high position are:
  • UDA Holdings Berhad
board members – Mohd Shafei Abdullah (Wangsa Maju Umno leader),
    Rizuan Ab Hamid (Kepong)
Mustaffar Kamal Abdul Hamid (Indera Mahkota)
  • Amanah Raya Berhad
chairman – Sabaruddin Chik, a former Umno secretary-general
board member – Budiman Mohd Zohdi, former MP for Sungai Besar
  • Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad
chairman – Abd Latiff Ahmad, MP for Mersing
  • Perbadanan Nasional Berhad
chairman – Syed Ali Syed Abbas Al-Habshee, head of Cheras Umno
Earlier , DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang said all political appointees, whether to the Senate or to public bodies, should have resigned in the two weeks since the general election, so new appointments could be made.
Felda chairman Shahrir Samad has resigned after being defeated as Johor Bahru MP, while Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin has announced he will resign as Felcra chairman at the end of the month. - FMT
