Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has said he cannot take up the education portfolio because it violates the Pakatan Harapan manifesto.
He said this in a Facebook video titled "The 'Education Minister' issue. This is Mahathir's response".
"That is a provision of the manifesto. I can't break it at the moment... of course, there is a demand that I take up (the) education (portfolio)," he added.
Asked if he would take up the portfolio, he replied: “I cannot.”
On whether he would personally like to assume the portfolio, he said: “I would like to. Otherwise, why I would choose that portfolio.”
Mahathir also said he would not pass the portfolio to Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as she already has her own portfolio.
The Pakatan Harapan manifesto for the 14th general election clearly states that the prime minister would not assume other roles, especially the finance portfolio.
