SPAD employees to be redeployed to JPJ, says Loke

The transport minister says 1,000 vacancies in the Road Transport Department have been reserved for the staff of SPAD after it is disbanded.
PUTRAJAYA: Transport Minister Anthony Loke today assured the 800-odd employees of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), which is to be disbanded, that their jobs are safe as they will be redeployed to fill existing vacancies in the Road Transport Department (JPJ).
“JPJ currently has 8,000 staff with about 1,000 vacancies which have been frozen for the moment to allow SPAD staff to fill them.
“So these SPAD workers do not have to worry about losing their jobs like what some people are saying,” he said after holding his first meeting with top JPJ officers.
Yesterday, former SPAD chairman Syed Hamid Albar expressed concern about the fate of the agency’s employees following the Cabinet’s decision to abolish it.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had announced that SPAD was among several government agencies that would be disbanded, after chairing the first meeting of the Pakatan Harapan Cabinet.
He said SPAD’s duties would be taken over by the transport ministry.
Other agencies deemed to be “political” or “non-essential” that would be abolished included the National Professors Council, Special Affairs Department, the Residents’ Representatives Committee and Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation. -FMT
