Umno: Dissolution of gov't bodies, committees a 'punishment'

Umno has expressed disagreement with the Pakatan Harapan government's decision to dissolve five government bodies and committees.
“The decision made during the first cabinet meeting on May 23 is more of a 'punishment' (hukuman) to the people, especially JKKKP ( Federal Village Development and Safety Committees) which served as an institution to manage local problems,” said the party's communication unit.
Apart from JKKP, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad also announced that the National Council of Professors (NPC), the Prime Minister's Department's Performance and Delivery Unit (Pemandu), the Special Affairs Department (Jasa) and Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) would be dissolved.
Umno said SPAD was established to monitor the land transportation system and the issue of its functions overlapping with the Road Transport Department (RTD) does not arise.
Umno also pointed out that both Jasa and JKKKP existed during the time when Mahathir was heading the BN government.
“Perhaps it is true the government can save about RM500 million a year by stopping the workers in these agencies. But at the same time, the plan to abolish tolls, according to rating agency Moody's, would involve an extremely huge compensation.
“JKKKP, which existed during Mahathir's administration during the 80s, has contributed much to the people.
“The same with Jasa. Why does Mahathir only realise its 'mistakes and weaknesses', if any, only now?” it added.
Umno also expressed regret that the dissolution of these agencies and committees occurred at a time when Muslims are preparing to celebrate Hari Raya.
The party said Muslims employees of these agencies and committees were “presented” with a decision that ruins their rice bowl.
Due to this, Umno said it is appropriate for these workers to be absorbed into other government departments and agencies instead of being left in the cold without an income.
“Remember, we serve the people. The people chose Harapan as their representative.
“The government should use its powers for the interests of the people and not to showcase its powers by making irrational decisions,” it added. - Mkini
