Amanah accepts Raja Bahrin's appointment as senator

Amanah accepts Terengganu chief Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad's appointment as a senator, said the party deputy president Salahuddin Ayub.

"The appointment of a senator is the prerogative of Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong," he told Malaysiakini.

Amanah, together with its allies in Pakatan Harapan, had sent their list of candidates for senators to the premier, Salahuddin said.

However, he added that he was in the dark about who his party had proposed as the list was submitted by party president Mohamad Sabu. 

Raja Bahrin and seven others were sworn-in today as senators and will fill up a ministerial post and several deputy ministers positions.

Speculation was rife that Amanah had nominated its vice-president Husam Musa to be the member of the Senate.

A source in Amanah told Malaysiakini that the party had nominated Husam for the post.

When asked if Husam and his supporters would be unhappy, he said: "(You) have to ask him, we have done our part."

DAP's Liew Chin Tong, Raja Bahrin and Hindraf's P Waythamoorthy are among the eight senators who will be sworn in at Parliament this afternoon. 

Besides the trio, three others - namely Ismail Ibrahim, Mohd Radzi Md Jidin and Marzuki Yahya - will also be appointed as senators through the federal government's quota.

The remaining two senator candidates were nominated through the state government quota.

They are Hussain Awang, who was nominated by the Terengganu assembly, and Asmak Husin who was chosen by Kelantan. - Mkini
