CJ says Native Court system still relevant in Sabah

The Native Court system in Sabah is still relevant and applicable to date, according to chief justice Richard Malanjum.

“The Native Court system is relevant and applicable... (the community) is still using it and it is still relevant (for them),” he told Bernama in Kenaingau after attending a dialogue titled ‘Traditional Customs of the Murut from the National Legislative Angle’ with 2,000 members of Murut community and custom practitioners.

The programme was organised by the Sabah Murut Association.

Malanjum said the Sabah government had also formed a committee under its state laws and native affairs ministry to look into the mechanism to recognise the Native Court as equivalent to syariah and civil courts.

He said a similar committee had also been formed in Sarawak.
