SHAH ALAM: The crowds who gathered near the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya had shouted ‘pukul bomba’ (beat the firemen) as soon as the fire fighters arrived at the scene, the coroner’s court was told today.
Mohd Shahrul Anuar Kamaruddin, 27, who was the seventh witness in the inquest into the death of firefighter Muhammad Adib Mohd Kassim said the crowds who marched towards the Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) had armed themselves with various objects assembling samurai sword and steel pole.
“As soon as we arrived at the scene, I jumped out from the FRT and was greeted by three men who marched towards our vehicle with their hands holding brick, a steel pole and a long object that looked like a samurai sword.
” As soon as I was outside the vehicle (FRT), I saw three men charged towards us.
“I was shocked and could hear them shouting: ‘do not put out the fire!’ and ‘beat the firemen!’ several times, before I jumped back into the FRT to save myself.
“Inside the truck, I could hear the knocking and when I look out through the windshield, I saw the Emergency Medical Response Service (EMRS) was head-to-head with the FRT.
“I saw the mob had swarmed the vehicle (EMRS),” he said when answering a question by deputy public prosecutor Zafran Rahim Hamzah.
He said the FRT’s driver Md Elliza Mohd Noor yelled “this is too much!” before reversing the vehicle. He then saw his supervisor Badrul Hisham Salim @ Ali reporting back to their operations centre that they were under attack by the mob.
Mohd Shahrul said he only realised one of his comrades, Mohd Hazim Mohd Rahimi was missing during the incident and reported it to Mohd Badrul, who sat beside the driver’s seat.
“He said we needed to go to police station first to lodge a report and it was then I only realised that Muhammad Adib was missing.
“One of colleagues called his (Adib’s) mobile phone and a member of the public picked up the call telling us that they are taking Muhammad Adib to Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC),” said Shahrul, who has been a fireman at the Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue station for the past three years.
The inquest is being held before coroner Rofiah Mohamad.
It was claimed that Muhammad Adib, 24, died from severe injuries sustained after he was allegedly assaulted by rioters at the Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Subang Jaya on Nov 27.
He had been part of an emergency response team dispatched to the scene to douse a vehicle which had been torched.
Despite showing signs of recovery while being treated at the National Heart Institute, Adib died on Dec 17.
