Empty coffers - Anwar prefers not to be in Guan Eng's shoes

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said he would turn down the finance minister post if it is offered to him at this juncture due to the nation's economic constraints.
“I would not serve because this is unlike before (when) we had lots of funds.
"The GDP (gross domestic product) growth was 10 percent and not at (as now) 4.5 percent," he said during a speech at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIAM) today.
Anwar noted how Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng is forced to issue standard responses whenever there is a request for allocation.
"The only answers he can give is 'we will look at it', 'we can't approve now', 'we can consider approving later'. This is the standard reply because we are in financial constraints," he added.
Anwar had served as finance minister from 1991 to 1998.
The Pakatan Harapan government has claimed that it inherited a debt of more than RM1 trillion from the previous BN administration.
Anwar launched the AbuSulayman Fund and presented a mock cheque for US$250,000 (RM1.03 million), which was donated by Professor Emeritus Abdul Hamid A AbuSulayman, the former rector of IIAM.
He said this was a good start to kick off the fund, which would allocate funds to underprivileged and excellent students.
Anwar then went on to pledge that the Harapan government would do its part in providing allocations to the higher education institution. - Mkini
