Amid outcry, some PTPTN borrowers say okay with blacklisting

Suggestions for the restoration of the travel blacklist against National Higher Education Loan Fund (PTPTN) loan defaulters have sparked an outcry, particularly as it runs contrary to Pakatan Harapan's manifesto.
However, some PTPTN borrowers said they have no qualms with the blacklist while others suggested a more convenient repayment method.
Nur Laila Rahmat, 28, said those who can afford to travel abroad should pay off their loan.
"I'm okay with the blacklist. There are some who want to go for overseas trips but do not want to pay PTPTN.
"Many of them also can afford to buy expensive mobile phones but yet cannot afford to pay their loan," said Nur Laila, who said she is consistently repaying her PTPTN loan.
She added that PTPTN needs to ensure sufficient fund for the next generation of students.
Meanwhile, 32-year-old Nur Kamalia said she wouldn't mind tougher action, including publishing the names of defaulters in the newspaper.
"If there are not enough funds (left in PTPTN), it will have a real impact on students from families that really need the loan.
"They may have to give up on furthering their studies," she said.
Fadzleeb Ayub, 29, said it would be better if PTPTN repayment is done through a deduction from Account 2 from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) contribution is made instead of coming from one's salary.
"This is because the borrower may need the money for family expenses or that their salary is not very high," he said.
He also lamented that the salary for undergraduates in urban centres could not keep up with the cost of living.
He added repayment may improve if the minimum wage was increased.
"This would help borrowers to repair their PTPTN loan," he said.

At present, the minimum wage is RM1,100. The government plans to increase this to RM1,500 by 2023. - Mkini
