TREATMENT - COVID 19

There are currently no specific treatment approved for Covid-19, and no cure for the infection, although various treatments and vaccines are currently under study. Instead, the current treatment focuses on managing the symptoms as the virus run its course.

It is a MUST for you to seek medical help if you are infected with Covid-19. Your doctor will recommend treatment for any symptoms or complications that you may develop.

Some experimental treatments are being tested to see how effective they are. Examples of the therapies used or could be used for this illness include:

• antiviral or antiretroviral medications
• breathing support such as ventilators
• steroids to reduce lung swelling
• blood plasma transfusions
• effective antibodies

There are various experimental drugs or therapies which are currently being used or could be used in the near future to treat Covid-19 patients. Some of these specific drugs and therapies are explained below.

Remdesivir made by an American biotechnology company, Gilead Sciences, is a novel antiviral drug first developed to fight against Ebola virus and Marburg virus infections. The adverse effect of taking this drug is that it increases the liver enzyme levels that may indicate possible liver damage. The other side effects are nausea and vomiting.

Chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine are another two drugs used to treat Covid-19. Both drugs are used primarily to prevent and treat malaria. Some side effects of taking these two drugs are headache, loss of appetite, diarrhea, upset stomach, stomach pain, skin rash or itching, hair loss and mood or mental changes.

Some hospitals have been using a combination of two off-label antiretroviral drugs, Lopinavir and Ritonavir, which are commonly used to treat HIV patients. The common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, gas, headache and trouble sleeping. Other serious side effects could occur in some patients.

An antibiotic used to treat the lung infection in Covid-19 patients is Azithromycin. This drug is usually used to treat middle ear infections, strep throat and pneumonia. The common side effects of the drug are stomach upset, diarrhea/loose stool, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. Other serious side effects could occur in some patients.

A study led by researchers at Monash University discovered a readily available drug that could kill the Covid-19 virus in just 'two' days. They found an existing anti-parasitic drug, Ivermectin, managed to stop the Covid-19 virus from growing in a cell culture ( under laboratory conditions ) within 48 hours. Tests conducted so far were done outside a living organism and therefore, trials on patients need to be carried out.

Convalescent plasma is an experimental treatment which has shown some early promise in treating Covid-19 patients. It involves the taking of antibody rich plasma from people who have just recovered from the disease but no longer have the virus and then transfusing the plasma into patients who are currently suffering from the virus. This mode of treatment is however restricted by the blood type.

Chinese scientists claim that they have found extremely effective antibodies in their efforts to come up with drugs to treat and prevent Covid-19. Their research team has isolated a few antibodies that could block the virus that causes Covid-19 from entering the human cell.
