No presser by Abang Johari on state assembly dissolution - Sarawak CM office

There will be no press conference by Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg either today or tomorrow in regards to a purported plan to dissolve the state legislative assembly.

This is according to a brief statement issued by his office earlier today.

It came after several online news portals reported on speculation that Abang Johari is expected to make an announcement between today and tomorrow.

“Reference is made to the report by The Star and other news portals on the purported announcement by the chief minister on the dissolution of the state assembly on Friday.

“This office wishes to clarify that no such meeting is scheduled to happen for now or tomorrow as reported,” the statement said.

The Star in its report today quoted a source saying that the chief minister was expected to make the announcement tomorrow, and claimed that the dissolution would take effect this Saturday during a visit by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

The Sarawak State Legislative Assembly’s term expired on June 7 and state polls were supposed to be held within 60 days.

However, the federal government had sought a localised emergency there to avoid an election amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The localised emergency in Sarawak is set to expire on Feb 2 next year, after which polls must be held. - Mkini
