Sivarasa's aides charged under MACC Act

A current and a former aide to Sungai Buloh MP R Sivarasa was today charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court for corruption.

Sivarasa's service centre manager KR Naveen, 50 and former staff Nico Kam Joo Hoe, 24, pleaded not guilty to three charges of soliciting and receiving bribes, according to Kosmo.

In the first charge, they are accused of soliciting RM55,000 from Bangladeshi national Mono Miah Siddikur Rahman for not reporting his firm of illegally bringing in foreign workers to the Immigration Department.

In the second charge, they were accused of agreeing to accept RM45,000 for not reporting the firm - Syarikat Dyna Maintenance Services Sdn Bhd.

In the third charge, they were accused of receiving RM20,000 for not reporting the matter.

The incident was alleged to have taken place between Sept 17 to 21 in 2017 at two restaurants in Taman Maluri, Cheras.

The charges were brought under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2099.

They face up to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine of up to five times the alleged bribe.

They were both released on an RM10,000 bail. Naveen is also Sivarasa's nephew.

The duo was arrested by the MACC in September 2017, but no charges were brought against them at the time.

Shortly after the arrests in September 2017, Sivarasa said he had organised a press conference on Aug 9, 2017, with a whistleblower to highlight the alleged impropriety involving the firm that allegedly used forged documents.

Sivarasa added that he had also reported the matter to the Immigration Department in a letter on Aug 24, 2017, and sought a meeting.

As such, he said there was no reason for his nephew to demand payment to hide information that he had already made public.

There were no further developments to the matter until yesterday when Sivarasa revealed that his nephew would be charged.

The PKR lawmaker had yesterday questioned the timing of the charges after he raised MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki's share ownership in Parliament. - Mkini
