KUALA LUMPUR: E-hailing companies are to be asked for answers to complaints that fares have become increasingly expensive and a burden to consumers.

Transport minister Wee Ka Siong said the ministry would call in the companies for an explanation and clarification.

“An increase from RM20 to RM70 in the current situation is seen as burdensome to the people, so I think as a policymaker, we will see if any party is taking advantage to make a profit,” Wee said today.

He said he had asked the Land Public Transport Agency to get the companies to explain what had happened. “In a day or two I expect them to give an explanation so that we can see in terms of what we should do and whether to encourage more competition.”

Wee said there would be no compromise with any company found trying to take advantage by increasing fares or companies seeking to manipulate e-hailing fares to make a profit.

E-hailing fares have gone up, reportedly as much as 400% or five times the usual rate at peak hours, causing passengers to call for government intervention. - FMT
