Ex-MACC chief Dzulkifli does not rule out contesting in GE15

Former MACC chief Dzulkifli Ahmad, who was appointed amid a purge against MACC officers probing the 1MDB scandal in 2016, does not rule out contesting in the 15th general election.

Dzulkifli (above) revealed the possibility of a political career while distributing aid to the local community in Tasek Gelugor, Penang as the honorary adviser of Kelab Anak-Anak Pulau Pinang.

"I am not involved in politics and I'm not a member of any political party but I do not rule out that if the people of Tasek Gelugor want me to contest... I will not reject their wishes.

"Whatever it is, the programme we are doing is done continuously regardless of whether there is an election or not," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.

Dzulkifli's tenure as the MACC chief was short-lived, having served from August 2016 until May 2018.

During his tenure, Dzulkifli was criticised for not acting on the 1MDB scandal.

A leaked audio recording purportedly showed him contacting then prime minister Najib Abdul Razak to inform him that he had been implicated in an investigation paper.

At the time, Dzulkifli was serving with the Attorney-General's Chambers.

Apandi cleared Najib

After Abdul Gani Patail, a key individual involved in the investigation into Najib's involvement in the multi-billion ringgit theft of 1MDB funds was sacked, his replacement Mohamed Apandi Ali cleared Najib of any wrongdoing.

After the 2018 general election when Najib was ousted from power, Apandi was sacked while Dzulkifli resigned.

Najib was subsequently charged with corruption, abuse of power and criminal breach of trust.

In July 2020, Najib was found guilty and sentenced to 12 years in prison as well as an RM210 million fine by the Kuala Lumpur High Court over the misappropriation of funds belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former 1MDB subsidiary.

The Court of Appeal upheld the decision in December last year. Najib is appealing the decision at the Federal Court. - Mkini
