PETALING JAYA: A teachers’ group has called upon the state education department to probe an incident where pupils were seen dining on the school floor during a Teachers’ Day event.

Harian Metro quoted Ikatan Guru-Guru Muslim Malaysia’s (i-Guru) president Azizee Hasan as saying that the probe was necessary in order to find out the truth behind what transpired at the school event as well as to avoid any negative perceptions by other parties.

“The incident, if true, should have never happened. Perhaps the school should have prepared mats for the pupils to sit on.

“The school should also have prepared a clean, decent dining area for the pupils.

“They should have never been treated that way, especially during a Teachers’ Day event when tables were prepared for VIPs,” the Malay daily quoted Azizee as saying.

Yesterday, several pictures showing a group of students sitting down cross-legged on the floor while eating went viral on social media. Teachers were seen sitting at decorated tables.

The incident is believed to have taken place during Teacher’s Day, based on the banners in the pictures.

Another picture showed a man passing envelopes containing “duit raya” (money) to the students. The pictures are said to have been taken at the same event.

Netizens have expressed anger after seeing the pictures, saying it was uncultured to allow students to sit on an uncovered floor.

Azizee said it was the school management’s duty to take care of matters such as hygiene so that the school could remain a safe and clean place.

He also urged the education ministry to upgrade the canteen floors which, based on the pictures, looked like they were in a bad shape. - FMT
