Zahid: 'Excessive' to say dress codes burdensome to poor people

It is “excessive” for the opposition to criticise dress codes at government offices as burdensome to the poor, said Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

This is because it is generally understood that “decent” and “polite” clothing do not have to be expensive or beautiful clothes, he said.

“Malaysians of all races and religions have long understood the concept of decency and courtesy which is part of the Rukun Negara.

“Wanting to associate the dress code as burdensome to the poor or a certain ethnicity is superficial and excessive,” Zahid said in a statement today.

Previously, DAP’s Beruas MP Ngeh Koo Ham had urged Chief Secretary to the Government Mohd Zuki Ali to act against departmental heads accused of breaching the law when setting dress codes for the public in need of service.

Ngeh, who said he had received a few complaints from the public about dress codes at government offices, also stressed that the public should not be denied service solely on grounds of their attire.

“A farmer in shorts and singlet or Orang Asli in their traditional clothing are entitled to be served by public servants.

“A poor person who has no means to buy decent attire is also entitled to be served by public servants,” he had said.

In his statement, Zahid said it is “very extreme” for the opposition MP to try to link dress codes at government offices with racial issues.

“Surely, such a thing should not be questioned as if it is something very burdensome to the people,” he said.

As such, he hopes the civil servants are not directly affected by Ngeh’s remarks. - Mkini
