KUALA LUMPUR: Former Umno Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam’s contempt case will be heard on Friday to allow him to hire his own lawyer.

Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah allowed an adjournment as lawyer Logen Eskander, who Lokman named, was not in court.

“He is entitled to a counsel of his choice,” the judge said.

Lokman is facing charges of contempt for allegedly insulting a policeman during Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s corruption trial last Thursday.

According to a show cause notice read out to Lokman in court, he is alleged to have uttered: “Yang depan boleh, kenapa saya tak boleh? Stupid!” (The person in front is allowed, so why can’t I? Stupid!).

Lokman told the judge that the notice is inaccurate.

Sequerah said that this is a qualified plea and that Lokman would have to take the stand under oath to explain himself.

Deputy public prosecutor Raja Rozela Raja Toran, who is leading the prosecution for Zahid’s trial, assisted the court in the proceeding.

She asked Lokman to narrate the incident between him and the policeman that led to the dispute and to confirm that the officer had asked him to switch off his mobile phone.

Lawyer Ahmad Zahidi Zainal, one of the counsels appearing for Zahid, applied for a short break to resolve the matter.

Zahidi later told the judge that Lokman wanted Logen as his counsel.

“I have spoken to him and he insisted that Logen represent him. I have tried and I am no longer on record to appear for him,” Zahidi said.

Last week, Raja Rozela reported to the judge that a member of the public retaliated when a policeman asked him not to “play” with his mobile phone.

She said Lokman had called the policeman “stupid”.

Lokman, who was in the public gallery, stood up and said he was “typing” on his mobile phone.

Lokman told Sequerah that he will engage a lawyer to represent him in the processing scheduled today. - FMT
