MAHB apologises for flood at Penang International Airport

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB) said it regretted the inconvenience to airport guests caused by the flash flood at PIA and its surroundings on Saturday (Sept 24) morning.

"We regret the inconvenience to airport guests caused by the flash flood at Penang International Airport and its surrounding areas this morning.

"Although the airport's flood mitigation measures such as the on-site detention tank were functioning well, continuous and extremely heavy rainfall had caused water levels to rise quickly," it said on Facebook.

MAHB said flood waters receded by 10.15am and cleaning works were quickly completed in 15mins.

It further said flight operations were not affected by the flash flood as the runway and taxiways remained dry.

"However, due to the extremely heavy downpour, several flight take-offs and landings were delayed," it said.

MAHB also denied any power outage at the airport during the flood as reported by several news outlets.

The statement said a few retail outlets had experienced power trips that were rectified immediately.

"We will continue to remain vigilant and ensure a safe and seamless journey for all passengers," it added.
