The award of RM2.2 billion Kinrara-Damansara Expressway concession to a company linked to a Umno lawyer and a former chief justice’s wife was “based on merit”, said Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin today.
He said the lucrative project was awarded to Emrail Sdn Bhd and Zabima Engineering as they are “qualified companies”.
He was responding to a question raised by journalist on allegations made by self-exiled blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin recently, who alleged that the project was a gift to lawyer Mohd Hafarizam Harun and former Chief Justice Zaki Azmi for helping BN take over Perak in 2009.
Hafarizam, a lawyer for Umno, is a director in both companies, while another director at Emrail is Nik Sazlina Mohd Zain, who is Zaki’s wife.

"It was based on a proper evaluation of submissions by the company to the government and agencies concerned," said Muhyiddin.

All qualified bidders welcomed
Muhyiddin said that the federal government will not deny qualified companies from bidding for government projects.
“Whoever feels they can contribute to the public transport system, we welcome them," he said at a press conference after launching the MyKomuter six-car trains in Kuala Lumpur today.
Hafarizam was one of the lawyers who represented BN’s Zambry Abd Kadir, the current Perak menteri besar, in several cases brought by Pakatan Rakyat.

Last month, Hafarizam told Malaysiakinithat the two companies had won the contracts on merit and that they had to face “stiff competition” for the bid.

DPM scoffs at Johor PAS
In another development, Muhyiddin took shots at Johor PAS’ ambitious goal of winning 17 state seats in the upcoming general election.
“They can say whatever they want, but we also can say we are confident of winning 100 percent,” said the former Johor menteri besar.
On flash floods in Kuala Lumpur last night, Muhyiddin said the government will review its flood mitigation mechanisms and urged Selangor to cooperate.
“Despite having the Smart tunnel and other mechanisms, there are still certain areas on KL-Selangor border which does not have good drainage systems.
“It’s important for the Selangor government to acknowledge the problem,” he said.
