PAS is contemplating to do away with the ‘lafaz taklik cerai talak tiga’ (pronouncement of divorce of three counts) on the spouse of its elected representatives in Kelantan in the coming general election.
Party president Abdul Hadi Awang said a decision on its would be made after considering various aspects.
“The pledge is meant for Kelantan (elected representatives). It was introduced in 1995 when PAS was with Semangat 46, and at that time we had a majority of only one seat.
“There were attempts by the opposition to buy our elected representatives then,” he told reporters after closing an assembly of Islamic religious scholars in Kota Baru last night.
However, he said the ‘bai’ah’ (oath of allegiance) imposed by the party to prevent its lawmakers from crossing over to another would be maintained.
“Praise to Allah, our (PAS) elected representatives are consistent and ‘istiqamah’ in their doings and action, we may do away with the taklik, but will maintain the bai’ah,” he added.
On a claim that many PAS members were keen to join Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah), led by former PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, Abdul Hadi said it was just a claim.
“At the state level, many have returned to PAS’ fold,” he added.
On last night’s event, which was attended by more than 2,000 religious scholars, including from abroad, Abdul Hadi said it was to enliven the knowledge culture, including unity in the society, towards making Islam as a way of life.
