The ruling party has never denied that former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is a political prisoner as it is the truth, his fifth daughter Nurul Iman Anwar said.
She said this in her speech at the March 2 Freedom charity dinner organised by Anwar supporters in Kuala Lumpur last night.
“Anwar Ibrahim is a political prisoner and none of us can deny that.
“Even the ruling party has never denied that because it is a fact,” she said.
Nurul Iman said she and her family members will continue her father's struggles because they are used to facing such challenges since 1998.
“We will persevere and will not give up papa's struggles,” she said, referring to Anwar who is called papa by his children.
Anwar was sacked as deputy prime minister in 1998 after being accused of sodomising his driver and he was jailed for the first time.
He was again accused of sodomy in 2010 by his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
In February this year, the federal court upheld the Appeals Court's decision that found Anwar guilty of sodomising Saiful and he is now serving jail for five years.
Meanwhile, Pandamaran assemblyman Ronnie Liu said at the dinner said that Anwar should be considered for a Nobel price for peace.
Delivering a speech on behalf of activists from the Reformasi era, who called themselves “Otai Reformis”, he said Anwar clearly has influence in the region, as shown through his book “Asian Renaissance” on the merging of culture and politics.
Liu said he and Otai Reformis would meet world leaders to get their support on the matter.
His suggestion was supported by national laureate Datuk A Samad Said, who was also at the event.
“I am sure Anwar has the right to be nominated for the Nobel peace price. I hope this will not just be words. We must do something about it.
“With the nomination, his voice will be better heard,” he said.
The March 2 Freedom campaign demands for Anwar's freedom has also gained the support of Amnesty International, the United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner's office, Bersih 2.0 and the Malaysian Bar.
