Ling filed counter lawsuit on 14 December 2015, citing the main lawsuit as an “abuse of court”.
KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court on Monday suggested that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and former MCA Chief Ling Liong Sik go for mediation over the defamation lawsuit brought by the former against the MCA veteran.
Najib’s lawyer, Hafarizam Harun, confirmed this after meeting Justice John Louis O’Hara in chambers. “Justice John advised us to refer the case to the mediation centre.”
“Both parties agreed to give mediation a try.”
He added the next case management was fixed for February 18. “We will be back next month to inform the court the outcome of the mediation.”
Hafarizam said he will be filing the reply to Ling’s counter claim on Monday.
On October 27 last year, Najib filed the suit through Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages.
Najib is also applying for an injunction to stop Ling from further speaking or publishing or causing to be published any similar defamatory words against him.
On October 3, the ex-MCA chief told a press conference that he supported former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s demand that Najib resign.
On October 5, Najib’s lawyer issued a letter of demand to Ling, demanding that he apologise and retract his statement within seven days.
Ling did not apologize. Instead, he filed a counter lawsuit on 14 December 2015, citing the main lawsuit as an “abuse of court”.
