Investor in the undersea tunnel project, not the main contract, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
The Penang lawmaker clarified that a company investing in a project does not necessarily mean the company will be involved in building the project.
“The agreement we signed in 2013 was with Consortium Zenith-BUCG Sdn Bhd and the China Railway Construction Corporation Ltd (CRCC) as the main project contractor,” he said.
Lim said the contract still stands with CRCC as the main project contractor.
“The contract we signed to build the three highways is with CRCC so don’t try to confuse this issue,” he said.
He also furnished copies of the 2013 agreement for the three paired roads and undersea tunnel project to prove his point that CRCC was the main project contractor.
Lim was responding to questions raised by Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong on why a fashion company is now the majority owner of the special purpose vehicle formed for the undersea tunnel project.
Wee said the public were entitled to find out why an infrastructure project of the magnitude featured such prominent involvement from a firm primarily concerned with fashion.
Lim slammed Wee for trying to confuse the whole issue as there were no changes to the main project contractor for the project as the fashion firm’s involvement “is just an investment”.
He pointed to Minister of Finance Inc’s (MOF) recent acquisition of a 51 per cent stake in a 106-storey skyscraper known as The Exchange 106.
“The MOF purchasing the skyscraper doesn’t mean the MOF will be constructing it, they will let other contractors build it,” he said.
