The sultan says the palace will stay out of politics as the country gears up for elections.
PETALING JAYA: The Sultan of Selangor has reaffirmed the state palace’s neutrality in the run-up to the May 9 polls, according to a special message issued today.
“The Selangor palace and I will always remain neutral and will never side with any of the country’s political parties,” Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah said in a five-paragraph statement issued through his private secretary, Mohamad Munir Bani.
He said the stance was in keeping with Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy system, adding that he respected the “people’s power to choose a government they feel deserves to represent them”.
The sultan also reminded the people to maintain peace in the country ahead of the election and to stay away from conflict and disturbances.
“I hope the coming election will go smoothly and peacefully without any trouble among the people.” - FMT
