Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was mobbed by an enthusiastic crowd of press photographers and members of the public, after performing Friday prayers at the National Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on his first day in office as the country’s seventh prime minister.
He prayed at his usual spot in the corridor of the mosque. Seated next to him was Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Pekan in the 14th general election, Zahid Md Arip.
When prayers concluded, he and his security detail were immediately mobbed by press photographers and the public.
Shouts of “Hidup Tun! Hidup Tun!” and “Allahu akbar (God is great)” rang in the air as the crowd gathering around him increased.
This resulted in what would have been a three-minute walk to Mahathir’s car taking a while longer as people thronged to have a closer look at the prime minister.
Mahathir was soon escorted by mosque officials and his security detail to his car, as they gently pushed the crowd to make way for the nonagenarian. - Mkini
