ANWAR THE CLEAR CHOICE OF MALAYS TO BE 8TH PM, ZAHID A DISTANT SECOND – WHILE AZMIN ‘LOST’ IN THE RADAR: BUT WILL MAHATHIR LISTEN TO THE WARNING BELLS – OR WILL HE CLOSE HIS EYES TO MORE MACHIAVELLIAN MOVES FROM OVER-AMBITIOUS QUARTERS TO HIJACK THE COVETED POST

PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is Malay voters’ best choice to take over from Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said a survey by think-tank Ilham Centre.
This is despite the fact that most of the more than 1,600 respondents did not vote for Pakatan Harapan, the coalition of Anwar and Dr Mahathir, in the 14th general election.
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, president of Umno, the lynchpin of Barisan Nasional, was respondents’ second choice as prime minister.
There was also a large gap between the first and second choices, with 42% of the respondents picking Anwar compared with 24% who picked Zahid.
In the survey, 46% of respondents said they voted for BN, while 35% chose PAS in GE14. Only 17% said they voted for PH.
PH, however, ousted BN in GE14 to seize federal power.
After Anwar and Zahid, Umno deputy president Mohamad Hassan was the third choice for PM with 8% of votes, followed by Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (7%), and Economic Affairs Minister Azmin Ali (4%).
The PH components have an official understanding that Anwar will take over from Dr Mahathir in about two years. But rumours are rife that other leaders are being groomed for the office. The question of who will succeed Dr Mahathir has been a point of contention between duelling factions in PKR, of which Anwar is president.
The study involved 1,622 respondents aged above 21. About 16% were between 21 and 29, 30-39 (19%), 40-49 (28%), 50-59 (21%), while only 14% were above 60.
Men made up 51% of the respondents.
More than half the respondents were in the northern states, Selangor and the Federal Territories. The majority live in cities (66%) and the rest in the suburbs (19%) and rural areas (15%).
Most of the 1,622 respondents are farmers, fishermen or worked in the kampung (21%), businessmen (21%) and government employees (16%). More than half the respondents are in the B40 group (52%) while 31% are in M40 and 17%, T20.
The study was conducted via questionnaires and in-depth interviews from June 1 until July 30.
PH made history on May 9 when it ousted Barisan Nasional from Putrajaya by winning 116 federal seats. It also has the support of Sabah’s Warisan, which has eight seats, and Upko that has one federal seat.
BN won 79 seats but the number has since dropped to 54 after it lost its component partners from Sarawak and several Umno MPs, who turned independent. – August 14, 2018.
