Anwar to contest parliamentary seat in Perak?

A source says an independent MP recently met Anwar Ibrahim and offered to resign to pave the way for the incoming PKR president to contest in a by-election.

PETALING JAYA: PKR chief Anwar Ibrahim, who is eager to return to the Dewan Rakyat through a by-election, is eyeing a parliamentary seat in Perak, according to a source.
The source said the former opposition leader was likely to contest a seat currently held by an independent MP who had won on a Barisan Nasional (BN) ticket in the May 9 general election.
“The MP met Anwar recently and offered to resign to pave the way for the incoming PKR president to contest in a by-election,” the source told FMT.
The reason the MP wants to vacate the seat is unclear.
The two independent MPs in Perak are Bagan Serai MP Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali Azmi and Bukit Gantang MP Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal.
On June 24, Noor Azmi announced his exit from Umno, throwing his support behind Pakatan Harapan (PH).
He said he had been an outcast in Bagan Serai Umno and was never accepted by the division members during his previous five-year term as MP.
Noor Azmi said he would be an independent MP but that he planned to join Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s party, PPBM.
He won re-election as Bagan Serai MP but his majority of 1,140 votes in 2013 was slashed to a mere 172 votes over his PAS rival Rohaya Bakar.
Three days after he quit, Umno was dealt another blow when Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz quit the party, also to become an independent.
Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz said he had decided to leave Umno as it wasn’t “stable”, even though the party had worked hard to wrest Bukit Gantang back from PAS in the May 9 polls.
“This disapointment has led me to relinquish my position as Bukit Gantang Umno chief and hand my duties over to my deputy,” he told a press conference then.
In the recent election, he won the seat from PAS after a tough three-cornered fight against Idris Ahmad of the Islamist party and PH’s Khadri Khalid.
Sources in PKR said Anwar could win the determined seat although BN had won the Bagan Serai and Bukit Gantang constituencies with a small majority.
“Winning the by-election should not be problem for Anwar as PH is in control of Putrajaya and the Perak state government,” the source added.
Anwar has insisted that he is in no hurry to become the prime minister, saying his priority is to enter the Dewan Rakyat.
Calling instead for support to be given to current prime minister Mahathir, Anwar said based on the initial PH consensus, a power shift could happen in the near future with his participation in the Dewan Rakyat.
He admitted there had been offers from certain members of Parliament to relinquish their seats to make way for his entry into the legislature.
“I appreciate those offers. For now, we should fully support Mahathir. We need to give him the space and means to lead the government without pressure.
“If I decide to enter Parliament, it will be as a supporter of the government. We are still observing. If you look at the process, it must begin with my participation in Parliament to put me in a position for a power shift to take place.”
Asked whether he would go for a by-election that was natural or engineered, he said: “Let us not pray for people to die quickly.” -FMT
