Behind closed doors, Dr M admits tough time over 'thick' manifesto

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that Pakatan Harapan was facing a tough time over its "thick" manifesto, some of the promises which were made without the expectation that the coalition could truly win power.
However, Mahathir told a gathering of Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah MPs in Petaling Jaya last night that the coalition must now do its best to fulfil them or find proper justifications for promises that cannot be met.
Several sources who were present at the dinner function last night told Malaysiakini that the prime minister also warned of a backlash.
"Actually we did not expect to win, we made a thick manifesto with all kinds of promises... we must fulfil our promises which is why we can't make promises that we cannot fulfil.
"We need to make sacrifices to fulfil our promises. If we can't fulfil them, we will need a good reason that is acceptable to the people.
"Or else, if we fail to deliver on our promises, the opposition will use it against us and we may be defeated (in the next general election)," he had said, according to the sources.
Mahathir gave an example of Harapan's promise to make the position of opposition leader equal to that of a minister.
He joked that the promise was made in expectation of Harapan being in the opposition.
"But we won and now it feels uncomfortable to give the opposition leader an equal rank to a minister.
"That is the problem when we make promises," Mahathir had said. - Mkini
