Bestinet operations suspended, gov't to sign MOU with Nepal

The government has suspended Bestinet Sdn Bhd's operations following allegations that it exploits Nepalese workers.
Human Resources M Kulasegaran said the Nepalese and Malaysian governments will sign a memorandum of understanding soon to achieve a solution to the issue.
"We will bring (the MoU) to the cabinet for certain approvals before going to Nepal to do what is necessary.
"Since Nepal is interested in sending their workers (here), likewise, we are interested to accept them," he said during a special committee media conference in regards to the scenario and management of foreign workers at the Parliament building today.
On July 23, Bestinet, the company embroiled in a Nepalese workers recruitment scandal, denied the allegation that it was involved in money laundering activities or profiting from the processing of immigration documents for foreign workers.
The information technology company also dismissed claims that parliamentary opposition leader Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was linked to the company.
Kulasegaran explained that his party will deliver the MoU in the effort to solve the issue regarding the admission of Nepalese workers into the country.
Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad who was also present at today's meeting said Malaysia will have a government-to-government agreement similar to the one with Bangladesh.
"The suspension (to send Nepalese workers to Malaysia) was made by the Nepalese government. We cannot oppose them. But we want a government-to-government agreement like Bangladesh," he said.
Since May 16, the Nepalese government has barred its citizens from working in Malaysia due to the high cost involving immigration security clearance (RM105 for each worker), a bio-medical check-up (RM100), and paperwork related to the one-stop processing centre which is operated by Swasta Ultra Kirana Sdn Bhd.
