Dr M wants Harapan MPs to be disciplined, warns gov't can collapse

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has warned Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah MPs, that lack of discipline and internal bickering would land the coalition in a coffin.
Malaysiakini understands that Mahathir conveyed this message during a gathering of government ministers, deputy ministers and MPs at a dinner in Petaling Jaya last night.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, some of those who attended the dinner told Malaysiakini that Mahathir complained how some MPs were still behaving like the opposition and urged them to act like the government.
The premier told the MPs that Harapan was a coalition of equals, and discipline was crucial because if any of the component parties quit the coalition due to bickering, it could cause the government to collapse.
"In the past, there was a dominant party (in the BN government) which could do anything and everyone had to follow even if they didn't like it.
"But now, we all have equal strength.
“Every component is important to the coalition. If one withdraws, the government will collapse - if not at the federal level, then at the state level," he had said, according to sources.
Mahathir also made indirect references to accusations that he was interfering in PKR's affairs as an example that could cause disgruntlement within the coalition.
"We have to make sacrifices and prioritise Harapan over our parties. If we disregard Harapan's decision in favour of our own, it will cause cracks and friction among Harapan parties," he had said.
Mahathir also warned that the opposition was waiting to recruit any disgruntled quarters that quits Harapan.
He also urged MPs to exercise care in their usage of words, warning that it could easily become fodder for the opposition.
"When BN was in the government, even a single word uttered by their leaders can be used against them.
"Even saying 'kepala bapak' (your father's head) can become a big issue but now we're in the government," he said.
Mahathir's message comes in the wake of a PKR MP's allegation that the premier and his trusted advisor Daim Zainuddin are plotting to prevent Harapan's de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the next prime minister.
The Kapar lawmaker Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid also claimed the pair were colluding with PKR deputy president Azmin Ali.
Yesterday, Mahathir demanded that those behind the allegation furnish proof. -Mkini
