MACC probing defence minister's aide over 'RM800k assistance'

EXCLUSIVE | MACC is investigating an aide to Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu over the allegation that he received more than RM800,000 from several parties to settle his bankrupt status.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Azam Baki confirmed with Malaysiakini that an investigation is being carried out.
However, he declined to reveal details of the probe as it is still ongoing.
Meanwhile, sources told Malaysiakini that the aide was declared bankrupt by the Insolvency Department about four years ago.
His status remained as such until late May, when several payments were credited to the department's account as settlement for his debts.
"He is being investigated by MACC after having his debts, amounting to over RM800,000, paid by several parties.
"It was alleged that the payments were made on his behalf only a few days after Mohamad was sworn in as the defence minister,” said one of the sources.
Another source revealed that MACC has recorded the aide's statement to facilitate the investigation.
Apart from this, the source said statements were also recorded from 10 others, including several defence contractors and business representatives.
"It was suspicious as it came when he was purportedly going to be appointed as an aide to the minister,” he added.
The source said MACC is investigating whether the debts were settled with the intention to secure projects in return.
Mohamad, who is also the president of Amanah, reported for duty as defence minister on May 22, a day after he was sworn in together with 13 other Pakatan Harapan leaders.
Malaysiakini has contacted the minister and his press secretary for comments. - Mkini
