Ministry to work on 'ugly' tourism logo, shades-wearing orangutan in limbo

The fate of the orangutan sporting a pair of shades on the Visit Malaysia 2020 logo now hangs in the balance.
This is because the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is planning to improve the logo, which an overwhelming number of netizens have panned as “ugly”.
Minister Mohammaddin Ketapi said a contest would be organised to improve the logo.
"We're not ditching it but we'll improve it. There were many complaints it wasn't nice...
"Perhaps we can make changes to the orangutan in shades,” he told journalists at an event at the Parliament building this morning.
Mohammaddin said the contest would be open to all and details would be released soon.
The logo, which was approved by former tourism and culture minister Nazri Aziz last year under the previous BN government, courted a torrent of criticism from netizens after it was published online.
However, Nazri stood firm. The former minister insisted that he would not budge on the logo despite the criticism.
Expressing confidence in the ministry's in-house design department, Nazri said: “Every year there are 1.5 billion people traveling overseas and it is these people that the logo was made for, not the locals.”
“We kept the twin towers, the orangutan, proboscis monkey and turtle because these are our symbols and it’s what foreigners want to know about Malaysia when they come here,” he added.
