GEORGE TOWN: Nine men who were charged under an anti-terrorism law pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of being members of an unlawful society at the High Court here today.
The men, who were initially detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 or Sosma, were charged under Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966.
Judicial commissioner Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh sentenced the men to 16 months in jail starting from the date of their arrest.
Given that they were arrested between Jan 1 and May 6 last year, this means the nine men have effectively been freed.
The nine are: Chan Yi Heng, 23; Harry Tan Cheng Yu, 32; Lim Boon Hooi, 41; Yeong Kah Man, 27; Yeoh Choon Hin,38; Yeoh Choon Hong,46; Tang Soon Poh,25; Teoh Chin Yeow, 25; and Teng Kok Loon, 30.
According to the charge sheet, they were involved in Gang 24 activities from Jan 1, 2015 to May 6, 2017 in various parts of Penang.
They were originally charged with being part of an organised crime group under Section 130V (1) of the Penal Code which carries a minimum jail term of five years and a maximum of 20 years.
Another group of 18 men who were also charged under the same section of the Penal Code pleaded guilty to an alternative charge of being part of an unlawful society under the Societies Act 1966.
The men were: Koh Thiam Hua, 38; Ng Chian Sia, 55; Toh Kar Luan, 27; Teh Swee Chin, 32; Bee Hooi Siang, 45; Eee Ching Hock, 45; Jeremy Cheng Yee Fun, 35; Mah Chee Seng, 47; Goh Chun Shien, 37; Ng Ah Boey, 46; Teng Kok Haw, 27; Lim Leong Huat, 28; Chee Chia Heng, 33; Song Wai Hon, 34; Teoh Jong Yow, 37; Lee Chew Hong, 46; Tan Soo Ching, 37 and Teh Hang Beng, 39.
Deputy public prosecutor Lim Cheah Yit asked for their cases to be brought to the Magistrate’s Court, which was allowed by Shahrir. - FMT
