After almost being completely wiped out in the Federal Territories, Umno will leave the selection of its electoral candidates in the territories to the party's grassroots.
This was said by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today during his Turun Padang visit to Federal Territories Umno at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
"I have made the commitment in front of all division and branch leaders (earlier) that for the next general election, we do not have to use the service of consultants to pick our candidates.
"I give the full autonomy to the FT Umno liaison committee, divisions and branches to pick who are the best to be fielded as candidates.
"Firstly, the candidate must be winnable, likeable, and reliable. And number four is no cable. The use of cable is a problem.
"That is why I told my comrades at the divisional and state level that they should give the opportunity to the branches to determine who to be fielded as candidates according to the three criteria mentioned just now," he said.
Pakatan Harapan almost made a clean sweep in the Federal Territories, with BN and Umno only holding on to Putrajaya.
