Plot against Dr M: Anwar points to 'particular royal family member'

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claim of an attempt to pit the rulers against him over the Rome Statute was in reference to particular royal personality and not by political parties, said his designated successor Anwar Ibrahim.
Anwar said this when asked if Mahathir's claim may have been in reference to someone within Pakatan Harapan.
"The statement is rather specific. The prime minister was making reference to a specific attempt by a particular personality in a royal family or household that brought it (Rome Statute) up.
"There was no reference to any party," Anwar said at a press conference in Rantau today.
Anwar said he was clear about this as he had spoken to Mahathir about the matter.
"It was clear to me because when I had discussions with him he did elaborate," he said, referring to his 40-minute meeting with the prime minister yesterday.
Yesterday, Mahathir announced Malaysia's withdrawal from the Rome Statute, citing that it was not because the international treaty was bad but due confusion created by "one particular person who wants to be free to beat up people".
"I find that this particular attempt to get the rulers involved so that they can get leverage, and even trying to get the rulers to sign something order against me," the premier had said.
Critics of the Rome Statute, including Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, claimed that the treaty undermined Malaysia's sovereignty and the royal institution.
Anwar said Mahathir was wise to withdraw from the statute to avoid any problems.
He said the Rome Statute is good for reforms, transparency, and rule of law.
However, he said the government must accept that some concerns must be assuaged, while negative interpretations by the opposition must be countered.  - Mkini
