Teoh claims trial over alleged insult of TMJ

Malaysiakini

Veteran broadcast personality Patrick Teoh has claimed trial over charges of allegedly insulting Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim and the royal institution.
Teoh, 73, was charged today at the Johor Bahru Sessions Court before judge Kamarudin Kamsun.
He was alleged to have violated Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. If found guilty, he can be fined up to RM50,000, jailed up to a year, or both.
This law criminalises the publishing of online material which is "obscene, indecent, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person".
Critics have repeatedly claimed that this law was vaguely framed and could potentially be abused.
Pre-trial proceedings would take place on July 20. Teoh was released on a RM1,000 bail.
Teoh was represented by Wong Hong Yi and M Puravalen while Mohd Syafiq Ghazali acted for the prosecution.
In May, Teoh, 73, was held by the Johor police for five days to facilitate investigations.
Teoh is best known for his smooth baritone voice on radio. However, he also comments on current affairs online, often capping off with a common Chinese expression that has origins in profanity.  - Mkini
