Penang has announced free Rapid Penang services throughout the state for Malaysian bus users from March 1 until Dec 31 with the My30 unlimited free travel pass.
State infrastructure and transport committee chairperson Zairil Khir Johari said the Penang administration appreciated the federal government's move in Budget 2021 to expanded the incentive for unlimited travel passes (My30 Pearl Pass) to the state this year.
"This initiative allows users to enjoy the bus service operated by Prasarana, Rapid Penang, at a price of RM30 per month and as a proactive measure to help ease the burden of daily expenses, the state government will bear the subscription cost of My30 Pearl Pass for consumers with affected income during the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The people of Penang can now enjoy free buses on all routes with the financing of this card by the Penang government," he said in a statement today, noting that Rapid Penang was the main bus service provider in the state.
The My30 Unlimited Free Pass financing collaboration between Rapid Penang and the state government will be launched on March 1.
"Users can subscribe to this pass at any nearby Rapid Penang kiosk from March 1," he added.
Zairil said for the first purchase, the user will be charged RM10 per card, which is the RM5 fee for the card and RM5 for the "purse value".
"Users who already have the My30 Pearl Pass do not need to buy a new card, but instead can renew it for free," he added.
Aside from easing the burden of the population, he said, the state government believes that this funding will be a catalyst to attract more Penang residents to turn to public transport rather than private vehicles. - Mkini
