GEORGE TOWN: An NGO leader was charged with internet abuse in the sessions court here today over comments he made on the police force on Facebook two years ago.

Haridas Kolandavellu, 40, of Seremban, was charged with making an offensive post on March 26, 2018 on his Facebook group “Defend People’s Rights Group”.

He was charged with improper use of network service by making an offensive comment with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

The charge carries a maximum RM50,000 fine or a maximum jail term of a year or both, upon conviction.

Haridas pleaded not guilty.

A police report was lodged against Haridas by an individual from Asia Heights in Bandar Baru Air Itam here on March 28.

The complainant claimed to have been offended by the alleged racist and insulting remarks against the police force by Haridas, who claimed that police officers of Indian descent had protected those running illegal investment schemes.

Deputy public prosecutor Nabila Huda Muhammad Nazim asked the court to deny bail for Haridas because of the seriousness of the alleged offence.

In the event a bail is allowed, she said, it should be set at RM30,000 and not less.

Sessions Judge Norsalha Hamzah granted bail of RM20,000 in one surety and fixed March 11 for case management.

Haridas, who runs Pertubuhan Amal Mengutamakan Kejujuran, was unrepresented and did not post bail as he could not afford to do so, according to court bailiffs. - FMT
