KUALA LUMPUR: A day after announcing that one of its parishioners had tested positive for Covid-19, a Catholic church here has disclosed that six others who attended a wedding mass have also been infected.

Parish priest of the Church of St Joseph, Reverend Father George Pakiasamy, today issued a public health safety announcement that all weekday masses are suspended and that he will be observing self-quarantine till next week.

He said even though the standard operating procedures had been complied with and all public safety protocols observed during the above-mentioned wedding, guests who attended the wedding and any other reception related to it, should take the necessary precautions and immediately quarantine themselves for 10 days, effective April 10.

"It is also recommended that they undergo a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test as soon as possible," Father Pakiasamy said in his letter.

"As I was the celebrant at the said wedding Mass," he added, "and may have also come into close contact with on or more of the infected persons (though I had observed all precautions), I have taken the advice of the Archdiocesan Crisis Management Task Force and did the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RTPCR) Covid-19 test.

"I will continue to observe self-quarantine until April 20."

Weekend public masses at the parish will proceed, Father Pakiasamy said while weekday masses will be suspended while he remains in quarantine.

Yesterday, it was reported that a parishioner from St Joseph who had attended three masses over the weekend, had tested positive for Covid-19.

Two other Catholic churches in Selangor had also reported positive cases. - NST
