Police tighten conditions for interstate travel

Police have tightened conditions for allowing interstate travel amid the rising number of Covid-19 cases and allegations of abuse of police permission to travel between the states.

According to a notice dated today posted at the Bandar Presint 1 police station in Putrajaya, permission will be granted for only three circumstances.

These are emergencies involving immediate family members if supporting documents are provided, deaths and couples separated by long distances.

“Permission for interstate travel will not be granted for attending weddings and other festivities,” read the notice issued by police station chief Azman Johari Rakhibi, citing orders from the inspector-general of police.

Photos of notice have been making rounds on social media. When contacted, Putrajaya OCPD Mohd Fadzil Ali confirmed the notice was legitimate and reflected the latest instructions given.

For the record, interstate travel for work purposes does not require police permission but travellers must carry their employee pass, a letter from their employer or other supporting documents.

Yesterday, the National Security Council has also decided that interstate travel will also be allowed for individuals taking their dependents for their Covid-19 vaccination appointments.

The decision comes as the country prepares to begin immunising senior citizens against the disease on April 19. - Mkini
