National lockdown only way to curb spike in cases, says Umno VP

Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin said MySejahtera’s existing capabilities should be boosted to inform people if they have been in contact with positive Covid-19 cases.

PETALING JAYA: An Umno leader has called for a national lockdown to stop the surge in Covid-19 cases, saying that health protocols were no longer effective as people were showing signs of SOP fatigue.

Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin said Malaysia was now facing a health emergency with infections now at the community level, adding that Covid-19 was bound to spread rapidly in this situation.

Citing the example of developed countries which implement lockdowns to restrict human movement and break the chain of transmission when it reaches the community level, he said Malaysia should do so immediately.

“All Malaysians, whether politicians or those with titles, must sacrifice by not making any Hari Raya visits even within a district to prevent the spread of the infection,” he said in a statement today.

The former Johor menteri besar reminded Malaysians that with the slow Covid-19 vaccination process and the healthcare system and staff under major stress, the nation was at a critical phase in tackling the epidemic.

“All economic sectors must give way to the health emergency,” he said.

Khaled said the government must also enhance the MySejahtera phone app to boost usage instead of limiting it to mere QR scanning and providing information.

“It should also be used to notify individuals if they have ever been in close proximity to Covid positive individuals (under the proximity notification).”

He said many Covid-19 positive individuals may not know the source or place of the infection, adding that boosting MySejahtera’s existing capabilities may be the answer to the problem.

Yesterday, the government said premises listed under the Hotspots Identification for Dynamic Engagement (HIDE) system as potential Covid-19 high-risk locations will be ordered to be closed for three days, effective immediately.
