Selangor cops confirm SOP breach in a viral dancing video of a Bersatu event

Selangor police have reportedly confirmed a breach of Covid-19 prevention standard operating procedures at a function held in April, as seen in a recent video that went viral, showing a group of Bersatu Women's wing members dancing.

State police chief Arjunaidi Mohamed said Selangor police have questioned the organisers of the event held at a hotel in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, and are now in the process of completing their investigations for further action.

"I acknowledge there are SOP violations in the video.

"We have called the organisers and so on, but there are some things we need to resolve before handing this over to the prosecutors," Arjunaidi said at an online press conference yesterday.

Former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak previously shared a one-minute-35-seconds video on Facebook, taken at the function, but with no explanation, on a day when Malaysia's daily Covid-19 cases hit a record high of 17,045 new infections.

The post attracted over 25,000 comments within several hours, mostly expressing anger and frustration at the apparent breach of Covid-19 procedures while the average Malaysian remains at home.

Bersatu Women's wing chief Rina Harun

Many zoomed in on the programme's backdrop, which showed Bersatu Women’s wing chief Rina Harun and Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also Bersatu president, as well as antics of some of the participants who did not observe physical distancing nor wear face masks.

An aide to Rina at the time told Malaysiakini that Rina left the function when the group started to dance and that she was in no way involved in the scene.

Shah Alam district police chief Baharuddin Mat Taib previously said the case was being probed under Section 269 of the Penal Code for unlawfully or negligently doing any act that is likely to spread the infection of any disease dangerous to life, as well as for non-compliance with the Covid-19 prevention SOPs. - Mkini
